The local Chamber is moving from its site on Voght Street, to a place on Granite Avenue, 2000 block. It is said that it will have a part in the Iron Mountain Music Building that at one time housed the public library. The Granite Street is currently having street repairs and beautification applied to it.

It is level entry and  in the traditional business section of town.

World piece…..

Three days of strike is being accomplished by the British Columbia Teachers Union. Bus trips from the interior to the legislature and  balloons. Coffee at the public library, placards and  horn honking.

The right to strike in a limited way was given by the labour relations board, the other side of that is the employers right to lock out, this is not talked about. As it would be a whole new context to this public sector union that has a huge disposition to essential services. For those that have struck factories and plants in the past, some have felt the sting of long lock outs; and plant closings.

Opinion: Nobody should borrow trouble, life is too short.

Childrens Safety

A report is out about child safety and protection,in the province. Focusing on one event that was heinous; it looks at the  welfare system and not employment standards of semi skilled labour. And the conditions that brought a man to kill his children. By the by the public school system is on a 3 day strike , for  in part class size.

The best that can come out of this is another venting for the communities loss, however shifting blame may be counter productive.

Opinion:

The police and  the teacher that had no sensitivity or emotional intelligence to deal with the father of some children can not be undone.

Or perhaps this is where the saying entertained angels unawares is best applied.

Born Nicole Fox American model.

Twenty some years ago they divide the vast expance of land into an eastern arctic  as well as a  west meaning a legislature was distinct from the one in Yellowknife. There is  a lot of land that on the surface looks like it is not of much value, however mineral resources are  abundant. And the world is so small now. Last week at a scrap gold and antiques buyers event. A person brought in two tobbaco cans full of high-grade silver ore.  with silver around 6 dollars an once I talked to a person who mills precious metals for mines and we estimated that the A bar of silver could be poured from the cans of at least 50 onces About 300 dollars worth of silver. Only requiring a make shift furnace producing 2200 degrees farenheit for and hour.

I was in the territories when the Hunt brothers from Texas tried to corner the market for silver,by owning 10 percent of the world supply. The price rose to about 60 dollars and once. before  the supply side economics of Ronald Regan took over in the early 1980s collapsing metal prices back to demand.

The man said that a supervisor said take some for a  reminder fo his experience, and he did, this from a mine on the Camsell River on Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories.Lots of dynamics at work here, including publicly traded shares ,but if all the construction workers did  the same it would amount to a material loss to share holders. A loss more significant then market corrections when speculation increases stock value. We say if this happens to you be aware and get a recipe or something in writing. giving you permission.

There is a six month limitation period on crimes under $5000.00 in Canada, however there is no limitation on the value of your reputation.

Free minors licences are free to people over 65 and very inexpensive for those under and it gives you the right to prospect and collect samples on unclaimed land. You can pan for gold without one.

Book burning

Its freedom to read week and the library had a book burning. Placing about 50 odd books on a table that someone had asked to be withdrawn or taken out of some system some where. The display had fire wood on it and if a library patron had not taken one of the items to the counter and asked that it be spared it would have been burned this coming Monday, after freedom to read week was past. The last book saved from the fires happened late morning today. The book was redeemed from the fire by a middle aged First Nations patron who happened to be along with a radio (Q101 FM ) official.

The last book saved was a book by Timothy Findley that dealt with an incident when Army officers raped a fellow officer in the First World War.Titled The Wars, someone had asked that it be withdrawn because it promoted homo sexuality. In some contexts it could be difficult to ask that it be saved from a burning. The jacket cover includes flames of fire.

An member of the RCMP, had asked to have a copy of a book recently removed, as reported by a local paper.

The Temptress a book close to  and dealing with Women On Top remained on the shelf and was not placed on the table to be saved.

Editors note: The local police are seen as using resentment to extricate information from people; its incredulus that they didn’t know about freedom to read week coming up so soon. We trust that the public library remains a place of intellectual freedom and not constrained by the suspicions of the police.

Last rites

The local theater society is putting on a production ,Last Rites. They are planning for Circa May 17th.  A cast of eight players are working in the local community college to produce the event. A source says some roles will be doubled up.

The group is under the leadership of Mil Jurusic the new president; a teacher at NVIT. Mil has been involved in the Say so Society;  an open mike improv  group that frequent a night spot here called Iron Mountain Music. That group is planning a function for St Patrick’s Day.

Opinion:

The local group had a successful play done on historical figures for the 100 year centennial of the city. They will be building on that.

Labour Trouble

Yesterday there were about 29 ,teachers mustering in the parking lot of the Coldwater Hotel. The teachers had placards saying money for this and that but none for education.

A source tells me that they are applying to strike, as essential service the same source says they can strike for 2 weeks at a time then go back to work in the interim. A report says that the province is reading legislation to order them back to work.

There is a possible school closure for want of 25 students here that would mean teacher job loss.

Opinion: They are getting their views known, but it seems silly and political. The province apparently has a zero net increase policy that means to get   a raise somethings got to go.
