The people of Merritt are having their kick off parade for the Christmas season to-night. all the merchants will be open for the parade with specials and advertised incentives in the local weekly newspaper.

The small community of Merritt puts a lot of effort into the evening and it shows a lot of coöperation and commitment as it generally very succesful.

The construction company Sanders and Company provided a 30 foot pine tree for the center of Spirit square and it was decorated and ready last evening . Overnight vandals tore the lights off and attempted to remove the tree from spirit square. At 8:AM this morning to city workers were well on with the task of repairing the damage. The tree was up and lights were being restored. The pair was confident about it being ready for the after dark parade and open house of the downtown core of Merritt.

Country Christmas

Merritt is a very active place here after November 27th the countdown to Christmas starts then and a parade and midnight madness event starts it off. The local FM station has contests for home town shopping, and merchants try to establish their business success for the next year around the season. The local library is offering a 1000 dollars  in a contest that ends on November 26th.  The efforts that go into Christmas here are exceptional and sometimes quite heart warming.

The digital money company swag bucks are offering a Christmas preview sale for online shopping that ends on November 26th 20% off and 8 swag bucks ( 8 cents or eight percent) for every dollar spent on-line at Macy’s. The good will of the season is out there and is a significant value even for those involved in Christmas selling.

Q 101 is offering a draw for 1500 dollars in a home town shopping spree, ending December 9th..

The scenery can be very homey with snow-covered hills and a hush of the past looking to a new year.

Peace on earth good will to mankind;  without argument.

For those needing hope the season is quite under girding and lasting.

The 1901 Caister lifeboat disaster.

The local police had a road block on Voght Street last evening we were taking pictures and a constable asked if ” we could help you sir” . After a reply we both went about our business which included more pictures and demands to see drivers licences.

The corner on Voght street is a traditional spot for the local police to have road blocks . A well advertised campaign at Holiday time called counter attack checked for drinking drivers at  about the same location.  The bend in the road afforded a surprise effect for cars coming down from a hotel on the hill. The hotel is gone in a fire some years ago but there was a good response to the Halloween activities by locals this year, with many people dressing up and having fun.

The road block was not around the bend  and was visible coming down the hill. The RCMP  remind people to be visible after dark on this social occasion.

Editors note: On examination of the photos the police where around the corner from the long hill that used to accommodate the Largest hotel in Merritt’s patrons returning to the center of town.

Snow

The weekend saw a lot of wind here probably gale force. At least one large tree was ripped up and half  of it on the ground. Cold weather and snow was right behind it. Last night snow fell again and is still on the ground of this 600 meter above sea level community.
Some lighting and thunder claps proceeded a power outage over most the city of circa 8000 here. Causing intersections to be under person direction instead of street lights.
Calm and clearing at mid morning.
Editors note: powerful weather can put in play a series of events that can bring people into danger. Think ahead.

Hobiyee

The crescent moon on the bottom of the orb was beautiful to see last night and a source in the first nations community says that is a Hobiyee. She said that the more pronounced the spoon effect of the crescent the better an omen for a good year is.

The word Hobiyee according to the source is a first nation word from a northern area about Kitwanga. Thats the Prince Rupert area of north western British Columbia.

An interpretation of the moon is that it will be agood year, which may be in conflict with the Chinese lunar new year  that begins the year of the snake as some see that as not a good year. However some good celebrations are planned by the Niska nation:  Say’tKilim-Goot ( one heart, one path, one nation) at Gitwinksihlkw BC, at the TS’oohl memorial center February 22 and 23,2013.

The Niska nation is the first nation group that got a treaty from the Canadian government that includes some self-government and taxation authority some years ago and is being monitored for results.
