We have it on authority that a public meeting last night reversed the brand change that the city department adopted earlier this year. The attitude brand is gone and with it the image of a couple under a blanket in a field of produce. The caption Farm Fresh that went with the attitude brand may be gone.

The city had spent 8000 dollars on the change and graphics. A source says that a number of new ideas to replace the Country Music Capital were gleaned last evening for a public consultation process to begin.

There are always new Yoga retreats springing up about Merritt.There have never been any complains heard. Yoga retreats are intimate and and a bit reclusive, and they are pricey. this one is 350 dollars for 2 nights 5 vegetarian meals  and 4 yoga classes. With guided hiking and biking. ( private group retreats)

Called Tantu Yoga it is directed by a Lindsey Fehr CY tantuyoga@gmail.com tantuyoga.ca.  It is endorsed by the Arts Council, the City of Merritt, the Chamber and some local dance companies. They are proclaiming a new season and their poster centers on a very healthy looking tree.

Trans mountian pipeline public meeting

The pipeline company that is applying for permission to twin their line from Edmonton to Burnaby is reporting a number of public meetings and consultations through their newsletter.

ABOUT THE CONSULTATION UPDATE:
•    Aboriginal engagement to date has included more than 100 Aboriginal communities and groups and the execution of 76 agreements including Letters or Memorandums of Understanding, capacity funding, and integrated cultural assessments
•    To date, as part of a comprehensive stakeholder engagement program we’ve consulted with thousands of individuals through 82 open houses or workshops along the pipeline and marine corridors and more than 851 meetings between project team members and stakeholder groups
•    This filing also includes a summary of Errata, which identifies and corrects errors in the original filing such as formatting, incorrect page numbers, or a change in scale to a graphic source trans mountain pipeline

The update comes from a filing to the NEB National Energy Board on March 20th 2014.

Trans mountain pipeline has operated a pipeline by tariff for 60 years as it goes by here in Merritt.

Waiting for the Parade ,a play by John Murrell is coming to the Kamloops Sage Brush Theater March 27th to April 5th 2014. In association with Thousand Island playhouse (Gananogue) the play starts at  7:30 PM Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday to Saturday 8:00 PM. Today there is a job fair or career promotion and awareness event at the Shacken Indian Band Hall, all day.  The featured speaker is Aliyah Rodiminkski from Okanogan college.

Other representations come from Thompson Rivers College, First West Kelowna College, the British Columbia Aboriginal Mine Training association and NVIT.

The local junior hockey team the Merritt centennials are done for the season. The team lost out to Penticton in 4 straight last week . A young man and member of the team from Ohio said he was grateful that they had made the playoffs and was philosophical about not making it to the finals. He said there was a player from Spokane Washington on the team as well, implying that he didn’t feel separated or isolated on the team.

The Merritt centennials are selling season tickets for the 42 season next year, at 115 dollars it is a great way to support youth in Merritt.

Wi-fi and a hair cut

The hair dressing shop across from the Coldwater hotel, Kruse and Style, in the 1900 block of Quilchena Ave in Merritt is getting wi-fi for their customers. It is Shaw service and it complements three services across the street in the historic hotel. “Its free to my customers “said the  apron adorned owner.

When asked about the city wide service that San Francisco brought in years ago  her reply was ” that would be great”.

The technician said it is a Shaw service for customers on a Shaw email ; when replying to the question of password protection.

One dollar a stamp

First class postage is going up at the end of the month.  One dollar will get you a stamp that has no face value and is good for one first class mailing  30 grams and under. However if you buy quantities, books of 10 or more you get them for 85 cents a piece, or $8.50 cents a book of 10. Business mailings that are metered will be at 75 cents an item metered.

The price will be effective on March 31, 2014 and  until then stamps with  no face value will continue to be available at 66 cents and will be honored after  the March 31 change.

Parcels and unaddressed add mail will not be  changed.

The local rod and gun club is hosting a banquet on March 8th, for 10 dollars the public can bring a potluck item and enjoy the fellow ship of hunting enthusiasts.

The public library hosted a read athon on September 26th as a part of Freedom to read week. In one time block 4 young men and women from local media read pieces that they choose as controversial. Workers From Q101 radio. The Merritt Herald editor the Shaw Cable programmer e by a community member, Carmen Fairley, billed as a media consumer.
There were presentations from a local author of Squawker a children’s book about having a pet crow . Squawker was locally produced and published.
Numbers of community members including Tracy Dunsmore from the CPO, Mayor Susan Roline, and classes from the high school maintained a continuous out load reading vigil from opening at 10 AM till closing at 8 PM.

The Merritt Community Theater Society, has a published business proposal  that they informally discussed this week at some meetings in the Merritt Civic Center. Interested people included economic development consultants from Kamloops and Mayor and council members.

Rich Hodgson a contact for the group said the group is looking for 5 million dollars to complete the project and have raised enough to buy the property in the Rail yard mall downtown Merritt.

The group said that they will be free from property taxes for five years as would anyone else doing new construction in the downtown. This is an economic development strategy of the city of Merritt.

The public library will be enjoying freedom to read week February 23rd to March 1st. The library often confirms their position against censorship and control of press, with posted slogans and observations. One of the events is a read-athon on February 25th.

The Thompson Nicola Regional District Library is at 1691 Garcia Street in Merritt BC. The library is open Monday through Saturday from 10:am to 5:00 PM with Tuesday and Wednesday having 3 extra evening hours till 8PM.
