He was also a member of parliament for Victoria and wanted to head of the executive of both the province and country. He was considered to be an iconoclastic personality and set a reputation for the province to be a place of eccentric leaders. He also earned the credit for being the Father of BCs confederation when it joined Canada in 1871.
