Malice

BCJHL , the local Junior hockey club is starting camp this weekend. A volunteer parent cleaning up the dressing room in preparation said she wasn”t sure how many but the camp is beginning.

there is usually double and some the amount of players needed invited to camp from minor hockey and other teams. After cuts a team for the season remains.

The camp this weekend is a conditioning camp  for about 25 people next weekend full camp of about 50 hopefuls.

Bill Heyworth Bar

Bill Heyworth was a Diamond driller that was a favorite at the local legion branch. after a long life that included a lot of his favorite brand of beer “lucky” he passed a few months ago. A memorial bar was part of his legacy, meaning that the serving booth upstairs in the hall is to bear his name.

Today new counters and cupboards are being delivered to accommodate the new bar status.

The Local Legion is in the 1900 block of Quilchena , in Merritt.

Language preservation

The local First Nations have a feast going in the back lot of the Indian Administration building on Garcia street. The occasion is the presentation of a schedule  for hunting and gathering that works with seasons. The English is preceded by  the Thompson Indian Dialect words for the season and flora and fauna.

A source says that a field copy valued at 100 dollars is being given to each member.

There are tepees and display tents as well as drummers playing and singing.

During World War II ,North American Indian language dialects were used in place of code to keep short wave radio messages secure from enemy use.

The by-election is to replace councillor Norm Brigden , who resigned to take a job.

Three names are on the ballot for a local by-election in September. The nomination period ends tomorrow followed by a withdrawal period.BoB Baird a former mayor, Harvey Keys and A. Polmans have filled papers already.

The local Macdonald’s is having a free coffee week at the restaurant . A small regular McCafe is gratis from August 6 through the 12th.

The receipt says discounted to zero dollars even without any purchase.

opinion: the regular coffee is smooth and wet a good choice for busy people.

Merritt Pro Rodeo

The long weekend, for labour day, here will see the Merritt Pro Rodeo come. The annual event is held in the Rodeo and Fall Fair grounds to the south- west of  the town.

The motto of the organization is ” get her done” which includes work on the stock ,  as well as clowns and other entertainment.

This year will be the 53rd edition on September 1st and 2nd, it is CPRA approved with 6 major events. Prizes are up to 2500 dollars. Membership due.
