Maximize Your Late-Season Skiing in BC

Snow for Whistler in the cards.

Best Ways to Use Late Season Fresh Snow for Skiing in BC

Skiing on late-season fresh snow in British Columbia can be an exhilarating experience. Here are some tips to make the most out of those conditions:

1. Choose the Right Ski Area

  • Opt for higher elevation slopes where fresh snow is more likely to stick around longer. Areas like Whistler Blackcomb and Revelstoke often have great late-season conditions.

2. Timing is Key

  • Ski during the mornings when the snow is still fresh and untouched. The sun can quickly change the snow’s texture later in the day.

3. Stay Flexible with Your Plans

  • Conditions can vary day by day, so be ready to adjust your skiing plans based on the latest snow reports and weather forecasts.

4. Explore Off-Piste Terrain

  • Late-season snow can create exciting off-piste opportunities. Just make sure to check avalanche conditions and ski with a buddy in more challenging areas.

5. Focus on Technique

  • Take advantage of the softer snow by practicing your carving and turning techniques. This can improve your skills while enjoying the fresh powder.

6. Use the Right Gear

  • Ensure your skis are equipped for soft snow. Skis with wider waists will offer better floatation and control.

7. Hydrate and Rest

  • Spring skiing can be more taxing due to warmer temperatures. Stay hydrated, take breaks, and don’t forget to apply sunscreen.

8. Celebrate the Warm Weather

  • Embrace the warmer weather by dressing in layers. This allows for comfort as temperatures fluctuate throughout the day.

9. Enjoy the Scenery

  • Late season offers stunning views with longer daylight hours. Take some time to appreciate the beautiful surroundings of BC.

10. Join a Ski Clinic or Lesson

  • Improve your skills while learning to navigate late-season conditions by participating in a ski clinic or taking lessons.

Enjoy the late-season skiing and make the most of the fresh snow while it lasts!

Freeze thaw dynamic

When ever there are freeze thaw conditions there is an increased risk of falling rock or avalanche. When driving in BC and in particular on secondary roads use extra caution under these conditions.

Record forecasts for avalanche this season, a real concern.

Blue Monday coming…

Third Monday in January

The sixteenth of January will be “Blue πŸ”΅ Monday” this year. Blue Monday is thought to be the most depressing day of the year. Chalk it up to post holiday season or the reality of weather and the risk of crop choice on the the coming planting it is worth noting.

Twenty six of the 89 days of the winter will have passed by the end of Monday the 16th of January 2023. Make them all count and perhaps your disciplined fortitude will see you through it. Then you will only have to be aware of those around you that are not as strong as you and you can reenforce them.

There are 15 days to the spring equinox or first day of spring. However it may not be a meteorological spring. Weather can persist because of many inputs including human activity. The traditional accepted day is the 21st however with better technology this year it is more precisely measured and is really on the 20th , in 14 days. There will be equal daylight and dark in the northern hemisphere on that day. Wednesday March 20th at 2:58 PDT will start the march to the summer equinox, here in Merritt BC.

Time change different event…

Don’t confuse the time change with spring! March 10th ( this coming weekend ) the time will spring ahead to daylight time at 3 am in the morning.

The 6 days could have had an effect on the start of weather here as we are six days ahead to the 23 degrees that tips toward the sun in the summer season.

Tims in tents

The local coffee watering hole Tim Hortons has two large tents in its parking lot. The Barista at the Starbucks across the highway says that they are to be there for 6 weeks while Tims undergoes a renovation. The drive through is going to be open for the renovation however tents are there to accommodate sit down patrons.
Weather or not this is a global warming support remains to be seen, the schedule puts it into the second week of November and a time that we here at 2000 feet above sea level get our first snow.

Winter

The temperature is dropping to about -11 c today with serious snow on the ground here in Merritt at our 600 odd meter home. It feels homey and there is less traffic.
