The weekend saw the return of the salmon to the Nicola River here in Merritt. Numbers of fish were in the river at the junction of the Nicola and Coldwater rivers on the weekend.

A fish trap is upstream from the junction on  the Coldwater River by  Voght park, there is little indication of fish taking to the trap route at this writing.

File Photo KDG

The price of gas has been stable here of some weeks at 111.9 a liter, including through the Labour Day long weekend. Today the Petro Canada at Voght and Nicola is selling for a dollar 10 .9 per liter down a penny. That’s probably it for the summer driving season. However personal thrift and conservation could well spill over into lower prices for food at harvest and necessary trucking from southern states of produce.
Lets hope every one gives a little and gets a little in the way of quality of life this coming fall and winter…
There are no pumps at the local Canadian Tire .

The average price in BC is $115.9 per liter lowest is $98.9. Price trend is stable….
At this writing all five competitors are at $110.9 per liter, that’s Shell. Petro Canada, Extra Foods , Super Save and Chevron.

Harvest coming soon
File photo KDG

September1 16th will see a full moon or harvest moon. At our elevation 700 meters above sea-level there is a possibility of frost. The average overnight low for September in Merritt BC is 5.9 degrees C.

The Harvest Moon
The Full Moon nearest the autumnal equinox is named the Harvest Moon since, during this month, the Moon helps the harvest by providing more light at the right time than other Full Moons do. Learn more in our article about the Harvest Moon.

In years when the Harvest Moon falls in October, the September full Moon is usually known as the Full Corn Moon because it traditionally corresponds with the time of harvesting corn. It is also called the Barley Moon because this is the time to harvest and thresh the ripened barley. Source The Farmers Almanac.

There is only a week from the full moon to the fall equinox on the 22nd of September. Thanks to all you hard working farmers…

More pollards, no peace without security:

Across the street from the post office in Merritt is Spirit Square AKA Legacy Square a project of the very successful winter Olympics held in Vancouver . A peaceful and happy event enjoyed by all. Good will was the lot of many cultural backgrounds and fine memories created.

The local community policing office recently moved in from a block over. They renovated the old ware house once owned by the pioneer Armstrong family that operated a department store in the next block( now housing the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.)  The removable pollards are designed to keep traffic out when occupied by people enjoying the stage and plantings.

Accidents can happen in a moment of time and people who watch out for our security may not be understood when only a lack of freedom of movement is cutailed.

This pollard kept some one off he sidewalk in August.

A pollard at the post office was struck shortly after installation a number of years ago, Mary-Ann ( a local historical fan) pointed out the hazard. ” it kept people on the walk from injury” a source said. It was later removed and not replaced. Go figure….
